Panthers' Brian Burns confesses 'emotion got the best' of him in wild ejection

Panthers linebacker Brian Burns did not want to dive too deep into David Tepper’s drink-tossing incident.

The owner of the Carolina Panthers is receiving criticism not only for his behavior off the field but also for the team’s subpar play on it. David Tepper lost all composure during the Panthers’ humiliating 26-0 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on New Year’s Eve and hurled a drink down the stands in the direction of the Jaguars supporters who were seated beneath his suite.

As a result of this deplorable act, the NFL fined him a hefty $300,000. This hefty amount is meant to be a punitive measure from the NFL as they hold owners to a high standard, being the biggest representative of the franchise. Now, this distraction from Tepper is the last thing the Panthers need, especially as they try to end their season on a winning note in preparation for a much better 2024 season.

David Tepper Is to Blame for the Panthers' Mess - Sports Illustrated

The good news is that they have more urgent matters to attend to, since Panthers linebacker Brian Burns claims the squad wasn’t exactly thinking about the David Tepper incident.

“You know, I don’t really think that’s our primary focus. The incident occurred in the midst of the game. According to ESPN Panthers reporter David Newton, Burns told reporters, “We didn’t get the outcome that we wanted so when you see the video [of the incident], we won’t be able to focus on that.”

The Panthers’ main goal is to win games, so there’s no reason for Brian Burns and the team to become involved in an unrelated situation. Naturally, David Tepper’s behavior does not reflect well on the Panthers as a team. However, Burns and the other players on the club have no control over that action taken by the Panthers owner.

Besides, it’s not like Burns was going to publicly criticize the owner of the team he plays for, particularly since it might damage his reputation with the franchise’s upper management. Ultimately, the NFL has already addressed the matter, and the owner of the Panthers, to his credit, has already accepted responsibility for his error.
