Michael Beale, the manager of Sunderland, has estimated when Patrick Roberts will probably return from his injury.

Patrick Roberts, who missed yesterday’s Wear-Tyne FA Cup derby loss, is anticipated to be sidelined for a minimum of another two weeks, if not longer. Ten days ago, the winger hobbled out of Sunderland’s Championship match against Rotherham United due to a calf injury that prevented him from playing in the team’s victory against Preston North End on New Year’s Day.

Speaking in the middle of the week, manager Michael Beale stated he would keep an eye on the 26-year-old and did not rule him out of the match against Newcastle United. However, Roberts was absent from the Stadium of Light teamsheet, and Beale acknowledged following the match that the former Manchester City player would likely be sidelined for several weeks.

“We can’t rush him because by the end of the season we are going to need everyone fit and firing. It’s unfortunate because I think Paddy is someone who could help us on a day like today [against Newcastle].”

Roberts will miss the home match against play-off opponents Hull City on Friday night and the trip to Championship promotion contenders Ipswich Town the following weekend, according to Beale’s timeline. A comeback would be reasonable for Sunderland against Stoke City at home on January 27 or, in the event that it isn’t possible, against Middlesbrough on February 4.
