:Yankees news throughout the Empire – January 8, 24
Hal Steinbrenner approves of the addition of a significant rotation piece; Marcus Stroman has updated the New York Mets; the Yankees have discussed pitching with Miami and Cleveland; An offer to trade Dylan Cease
New York Post | Jon Heyman: Heyman reports that, in the aftermath of missing out on Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Hal Steinbrenner is “on board with the concept of a serious addition” to New York’s rotation. Free agents Blake Snell and ex-Yankee Jordan Montgomery are two specific names Heyman mentions. He also mentions White Sox hurler Dylan Cease and that New York has kicked the tires on some starting pitchers in Miami.
MLB Trade Rumors | Nick Deeds: Deeds, citing Bob Nightengale, reports that free agent hurler Marcus Stroman has been in contact with the Yankees expressing a desire to don pinstripes. To this point, there is no indication that the Yanks have reciprocated the interest, at least not in the form of a contract offer for Stroman.
USA Today | Bob Nightengale: More from Bob: he has a couple of interesting nuggets buried in a larger piece focused on predictions for the rest of the offseason. Add Jesús Luzardo of the Marlins and Shane Bieber of the Cleveland Guardians to the list of pitchers the Yankees have done their due diligence on. It would almost certainly cost a lot more to deal for Luzardo, who’s under club control through 2026.
MLB.com | David Adler: Speaking of Cease… though he is coming off a down year, the price to acquire him would be high. Adler, in a larger piece that puts forth trade proposals for the White Sox hurler, speculates the Yanks could send Oswald Peraza, Oswaldo Cabrera, Austin Wells, and Will Warren. Even though Jasson Domínguez’s name is notably absent from this hypothetical, Adler still thinks this price might be too much to pay for Cease and shoots down his own proposal.
