Jim Harbaugh leaving Michigan to take Chargers job

Harbaugh, 60, has accepted a job with the Chargers and will leave Michigan after leading the program to a national championship this year, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Rumors had been swirling around where Harbaugh would be coaching in 2024, and on Tuesday, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the Chargers were “in striking distance of getting a deal done” with Harbaugh.

The Los Angeles Chargers are hiring Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh as their new head coach, Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported Wednesday. The Chargers now also need to fill their vacant general manager position to pair with Harbaugh.

Harbaugh spent the past nine years leading the Wolverines, which culminated in Michigan winning the national championship this year. The veteran coach previously coached the San Francisco 49ers in the NFL, going 44-19-1 in four seasons which included a Super Bowl appearance.
