My football-pool get-together swiftly turned into an intense debate on why the team is terrible.

Like many American males (and more and more women), I participate in an NFL football regular-season pool.

The pool is totally dependent on the Bears, their games, and their weekly standings, but I only joined this season. How much preparation is required for mediocrity forecasts if one lives in Chicago? Simple access.

The reason it’s called the John Rush Memorial Football Pool is that its namesake, John Rush, who is still alive and an active member, maintains the score and appears to be the only one who knows the peculiarly intricate regulations. I certainly don’t.
