Dan Campbell Admits He Made Mistake At End Of NFC Championship - The Spun: What's Trending In The Sports World Today

After Sunday’s humiliating defeat, Lions head coach Dan Campbell shockingly

acknowledged telling his squad they might have wasted their “only shot” at winning the

Super Bowl.

After blowing a 17-point lead in the second half, Detroit lost heartbreakingly to the San

Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game, 34–31.

“After the game, I told those guys that this might be our only chance.” Campbell remarked.

Do I really believe that? No. Do I think that to be true? No.

But I am aware of how difficult it is to get here. I know this for sure. Next year, it will be

twice as difficult to reach this position as it was this year. That’s how things really are. And

this is a whole ‘nother thing,’ if our hunger and our labor are not the same.

A trip to the Super Bowl should have been the ultimate goal of this year’s postseason

journey for the Lions, who had not won a playoff game in an incredible thirty years.

We have no chance of returning here once the offseason is around, Campbell stated. How

much better we get, what we add, or what we draft doesn’t matter to me.

It is unimportant. It will not be easy. You’re no longer going to be hiding from anybody,

and everyone in our division will be loaded back up. Everyone will be vying for your affections.

On top of the likelihood that the rest of the NFC North will ‘load up,’ Detroit will be much

more of a target because other teams now know they will have a difficult opponent if they play the Lions.

The Lions, who were frequently ranked last in the league, have become one of the hardest

teams to beat in the entire NFL because to Campbell’s leadership.

In 2021, Campbell took over as head coach of the Lions, and the squad concluded with a 3-

13-1 record. In the present, Detroit has a 12-5 record at the end of the regular season.

They proceeded to defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Los Angeles Rams before

losing what many believed to be an insurmountable advantage against the 49ers.

However, having continuity at the quarterback position will help Campbell and the Lions

as they look to avenge their collapse in the NFC Championship.

Prior to the team’s defeat to San Francisco, rumors circulated that they were going to start

talking to Jared Goff about a new contract before he enters the final year of his 2024 contract.
