IN RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSY — Every two years, the New York Giants were forced to change head coaches due to a cycle. On Monday, they defied that pattern. They have to replace everyone else this year instead.

That’s merely an overstatement following Monday’s turbulent start to the offseason. Following the firing ofat Shurmur, and Joe Judge in the span of two years, head coach Brian Daboll will become the uncommon Giants coach to lead the team into his third season. However, Daboll will have to put in a lot of work in the beginning of Year 3.

Daboll has to replace offensive line coach Bobby Johnson, special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey, who was fired, running backs coach Jeff Nixon, who left to become Syracuse’s offensive coordinator, and defensive coordinator Wink Martindale, who resigned.

, defensive assistant Kevin Wilkins, fired, outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins, and strength coach Craig Fitzgerald, who left to become Florida’s strength coach.

Martindale’s exit had the greatest impact of all those openings. When Daboll hired Martindale to lead his defense in his debut season as head coach two years ago, it was seen as a coup.

However, the romance ended abruptly. The stress increased as the Giants’ losses mounted last season, but it was mostly concealed by their unexpected success.

Joking about fights over pizza and forcing Martindale to receive the game ball as a reward, Daboll made feeble attempts to deflect attention from the problem on the same day that Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer published a piece highlighting the strained relationship. However, the relationship was actually tense right up until the very end.
