Mike McCarthy revealed on Wednesday night that he will rejoin the Cowboys as head coach for the 2024 campaign. On Thursday, McCarthy spoke with reporters about his comeback to the organization.

When McCarthy first stood at the platform, one of the first questions he was asked concerned his contract. McCarthy was questioned about how comfortable he was starting the final year of his contract without an extension that would have guaranteed his job past the upcoming campaign.

“I’ve never discussed contracts with coaches or players. “I will not begin today,” declared McCarthy. “I’ll just say that I have a lot of faith in the path. We are heading in a direction I like, and I feel extremely secure in my position.

McCarthy said later in the press conference that he believes the Cowboys know “how to win and we will get over that threshold” and that they have developed a championship program.

It’s not common for teams to have coaches serving in the latter year of their contracts, but the Cowboys accomplished it twice under Jason Garrett, McCarthy’s predecessor. Garrett was let go after receiving an extension previously, so McCarthy could need to show that he has a championship program if he wants to stay in Dallas past the upcoming season.
