Two Rising Stars from the Cardinals Make It Into ESPN’s Top 100 Prospect List
The St. Louis Cardinals have addressed important personnel issues this winter and are nearly ready to recover from their turbulent 2023 season.
In addition to the new additions, the Cardinals have some in-house support in the shape of two bright prospects who rank among ESPN’s Top 100 Prospects for 2024.
Masyn Winn of the Cardinals was ranked as the No. 20 prospect, per Kiley McDaniel of ESPN. The 21-year-old sensation, who debuted in Major League Baseball with St. Louis last season, is a strong contender to start at shortstop for the Cardinals on Opening Day.
In the 105 games he played for Triple-A Memphis last season, Winn hit.288 with 40 extra-base hits, including 18 home runs, 61 RBIs, and a.833 operating percentage.
Following Paul DeJong’s trade at last year’s trade deadline, the rookie infielder was called up to the major leagues, where he played.172/.230/238 in 37 games with 21 hits. The Cardinals may find that his powerful arm and exciting offensive potential matter in 2024.
Tink Hence, a right-handed pitcher, is ranked No. 49 behind Winn. Since being drafted by St. Louis in 2020, the 21-year-old has been working his way up through the farm system, but he hasn’t yet reached the Double-A level.
pitched for High-A Peoria and Double-A Springfield in 2023, posting a 4-6 record with a 4.31 ERA, 99-to-34 strikeout-to-walk ratio,.258 batting average against, and 1.33 WHIP in 96 innings.
Though he will need more time to mature before making his debut, the developing starting pitcher for the Cardinals has the potential to be an ace one day.
Fans of the Cardinals have every reason to be optimistic about the team’s future with the revitalized roster and strong farm system.
