Bucs anticipate interviewing former Rams coordinator Liam Coen from Kentucky.
He should join passing game expert Jake Peetz as the second candidate to meet with Tampa Bay who worked with Baker Mayfield in Los Angeles.
TAMPA — It’s likely that Baker Mayfield won’t be meeting the Bucs’ new offensive coordinator for the first time.
The Bucs quarterback has previously worked with a number of coaches who have applied for the position. Liam Coen, the offensive coordinator for Kentucky, is the most recent; an interview with him is scheduled for Tampa within the next several days.
When Mayfield was selected off waivers and signed with the Rams for the final five games of the 2022 season, Coen, 38, was the offensive coordinator.
The Bucs will speak with Rams passing game expert Jake Peetz on Thursday. Peetz was also involved on Sean McVay’s staff during Mayfield’s brief stay in Los Angeles.
Alex Van Pelt, the offensive coordinator for the Browns who assisted Mayfield in reaching a career-high passer rating of 95.9 in 2020, has already been questioned by Tampa Bay. With just eight interceptions and 3,563 passing yards and 26 touchdowns, Mayfield guided the Browns to a wild-card victory over the Steelers.
Coen, an ex-UMass quarterback, is in his second year as Kentucky’s offensive coordinator. In 2021, he had held the role before.
In 2022, Coen was appointed offensive coordinator for the Rams. Kevin O’Connell left to take over as head coach of the Vikings, and he took his position.
It is obvious that the Bucs would prefer to provide the free-agent quarterback some continuity if he re-signs with the team, even though it is not necessary for the new offensive coordinator to have known Mayfield in the past.
Mayfieldrecently completed a career-best passing season with 4,044 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions. He guided the Bucs to both the NFC South championship and the postseason division round.
