It's official: Detroit Lions hire Dan Campbell as their head coach

The Detroit Lions have a new coach and new direction after three losing seasons during which they faced conflict in the locker room and played poorly.

After considering a number of applicants, the Lions decided to select New Orleans Saints assistant Dan Campbell as their 28th head coach on Wednesday, the team said. Dan Campbell was chosen for the position due to his ability to inspire and lead.

JEFF SEIDEL: Lions are taking a significant risk with Dan Campbell, but at least they have a clear plan.

The team’s owner, Sheila Ford Hamp, issued a statement stating, “We are excited to announce Dan Campbell as the new head coach of the Detroit Lions today.” “With over two decades of National Football League coaching and playing experience, Dan understands the demands of playing professional football and what it takes to succeed in it. He will not only provide tremendous energy, a respect for the game, and an identity that everyone can identify with, but he will also help us build the culture we want to find throughout our business.

According to a source who requested anonymity because he is not yet authorized to discuss the agreement in public, the pact is for a period of six years.

Campbell becomes the third former Lions player to coach the team in the Super Bowl era, following Matt Patricia, who was sacked on November 28 after more than two seasons with a 13-29-1 record, and interim head coach Darrell Bevell.

Lions president Rod Wood stated in the announcement, “Dan’s passion for this opportunity was evident throughout our interview process.” Finding the appropriate leader who shares our goal to creating a winning culture based on cooperation and organizational alignment was crucial when we started looking for a head coach. Dan is ready for this next step, and we are thrilled to have him as our new head coach because of the leadership he has demonstrated throughout his football career.”
