REPORT: Baltimore Ravens Superstar Receives Massive Punishment From NFL - Gridiron Heroics

The Kansas City Chiefs handed the Baltimore Ravens a devastating defeat in the AFC Championship game last weekend. Both teams’ emotions were running high, as seen by the violent altercation between Chiefs quarterback Travis Kelce and kicker Justin Tucker and Chiefs wide receiver Patrick Mahomes during the pregame warm-ups. But a Baltimore star was called for unsportsmanlike behavior during a pivotal moment in the game, and the league is now disciplining him for it.

During the game, Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers was called for taunting after he grabbed a ball for a great gain and stood over a Chiefs defender, drawing a flag. As a result of the violation, Flowers was fined $10,927 by the NFL, as the league said on Saturday. The Ravens offense was unable to score a touchdown on the drive that would have kept them in the game, thus the penalty has already become legendary.

With less than a minute remaining in the third quarter with Baltimore behind 17–7, the top receiver made a 54-yard reception that would have put the team’s offense on the 10-yard line. After Flowers completed the catch, Chiefs defender L’Jarius Sneed grabbed onto his leg, which made the receiver shove Sneed to the ground and flip the ball close to him while flexing over him. The officials waved this, setting the Ravens back fifteen yards from the finish of the grab.

Baltimore’s drive appeared to lose momentum after Flowers’ harsh penalty, and it was ultimately cut short when the star receiver fumbled right before the goal line, giving Kansas City possession and resulting in a touchback. After the Chiefs won 17–10 in the end, the touchdown would have forced overtime and given Baltimore an opportunity to advance to the Super Bowl.

It’s reasonable to assume that Flowers’ unfortunate series of events had a major role in the Ravens’ defeat; the NFL’s large sanction was merely the cherry on top. Baltimore’s future is bright, especially with Flowers having had a fantastic rookie year leading up to the game, even though they were unable to proceed to the big game. Do you believe Flowers was justified in his conduct considering the significance of the game, or do you think he earned the hefty fine from the league?
