Nicholas John Sirianni was hired by philadephia eagles as their coach
Philadelphia Executive vice president Howie Roseman informed ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio on Thursday that the Eagles are selecting Nick Sirianni, the offensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts, to be their head coach.
For the head-coaching position, Sirianni, 39, had a lengthy interview that apparently began on Tuesday and continued into the next day.
Within the league, there was a perception that the contest had shrunk to Josh McDaniels, the offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots, and Sirianni, the coordinator for the Colts for the past three seasons.
In the end, Philadelphia hired the less-known player, but the more word spread about him, the more popular he became inside the Eagles organization.
The quarterback position, specifically Carson Wentz, was taken into consideration during the Eagles’ coaching search. Following Doug Pederson’s dismissal, following a deteriorating relationship between the two players, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie stated: “It behooves us as a team with a new coach, a new coaching staff, to be able to really get [Wentz] back to that elite progression.”
Wentz’s 2020 troubles were deemed “very fixable” by Lurie, but he was benched for the last quarter of the season due to his persistently subpar performance. He was replaced in the starting lineup by rookie Jalen Hurts, who sparked the offense early on but lost some of it in the end.
When current Colts coach Frank Reich was Wentz’s offensive coordinator in Philadelphia in 2017, he had a performance that was almost MVP material.
Reich’s sirianni right-hand man in Indianapolis who served as the quarterbacks coach in 2014 and 2015 while Reich was the offensive coordinator for the Chargers. Given Wentz’s high level of confidence in Reich, the relationship may be significant.
According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, Wentz’s relationship with Pederson was irreparably damaged, and it was believed that he would seek a trade this offseason.
The Eagles have contracts with Hurts and Wentz through 2021.
Despite a rotating cast at quarterback with Andrew Luck, Jacoby Brissett and Philip Rivers, Indianapolis fielded a top-10 offense in two of the past three seasons. Rivers completed 68% of his passes this season for 4,169 yards with 24 touchdowns to 11 interceptions in 2020.
