San Francisco 49ers standout wide receiver Christian McCaffrey
Christian McCaffrey, the great running back for the San Francisco 49ers, appeared to be having a fantastic Super Bowl debut, but he lost a fumble deep in Kansas City Chiefs territory, costing the team points.
George Karlaftis II, a fellow second-year player, was on the spot for the recovery after second-year linebacker Leo Chenal was stripped of the NFL’s Offensive Player of the Year award.
Before that, McCaffrey gained 28 yards on his first three carries while running through the Chiefs both aerially and on the ground.
This is McCaffrey’s third lost fumble of the season, and it is the first Super Bowl opening drive turnover in five years.
According to @ESPNStatsInfo, Christian McCaffrey’s interception against the Rams in Super Bowl LIII (2018 season) marks the first turnover on a team’s first drive in a Super Bowl since Tom Brady’s interception.
Fortunately for McCaffrey, the Chiefs offense wasted no time in going three-and-out on their first play after failing to capitalize on the takeaway. Even so, the 49ers lost the chance to get up early against the reigning champions.
