After the conclusion of All-Star weekend, the Toronto Raptors will go into
The Toronto Raptors will enter the last stretch of their season after All-Star weekend. With four of the team’s five top scorers this season traded away, it has been a year of transition in the North.
There will be a lot of moving components as the Raptors lean into a rebuild and attempt to define their new identity. While the team decides on their future course, a number of players may be dealt away in the summer.
To identify who will be the key players moving ahead, Toronto will evaluate the performance of their roster thus far in the current campaign. This season, some players have performed below expectations, while others have gone above and beyond.
Not doing up to par: Gary Trent Jr.
Gary Trent Jr., who is in his fourth season as a player for the Raptors, has not performed up to his typical level thus far this season. Playing time has a part in this. Trent is only playing 26.3 minutes a game in 2023–24, down from over 31 minutes per night in each of his first three seasons with the team.
In 2021–22, Trent was a full-time starter for the Toronto Maple Leafs, appearing in 69 of 70 games as a starter. His playing time and number of starts in the starting lineup have gradually decreased since then. His average of 11.5 points per game thus far this season is the lowest it has been since his second year with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Trent has obviously not been as productive as he usually is these days. Compared to previous season, he is shooting a whopping eight percentage points worse on two-pointers this time around. It’s unclear if he will remain in the Raptors’ long-term plans given his decline in output.
