Happy Caitlin Clark Day to all who celebrate.
DES MOINES: To all of you who are celebrating, happy Caitlin Clark Day.
A resolution designating February 22, 2024, as Caitlin Clark Day was approved by the Iowa House on Thursday. This is done in honor of the University of Iowa women’s basketball player, who just surpassed all previous record holders for the most points in collegiate women’s basketball history.
On Thursday on the Iowa House floor, eight members of the House—a mix of Republicans and Democrats—took turns reading the resolution. Then, on a voice vote, House Resolution 110 was adopted unanimously.
Clark, a graduate of Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, is praised in the resolution as “one of the greatest collegiate athletes of all time and a prime example of the pinnacle of Iowa sportsmanship and athleticism.”
The resolution states that “her extraordinary athletic ability has garnered national attention to women’s basketball as demonstrated by the packed arenas and unprecedented television viewership whenever she plays.” “Caitlin Clark’s incredible journey with the Hawkeyes has contributed to the global advancement of women’s sports.”
On February 15, during the Hawkeyes’ 106-89 victory over Michigan at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Clark scored a single-game program record 49 points, shattering the all-time mark for women’s collegiate basketball scoring. Clark broke the mark with a deep3-pointer made from the Carver-Hawkeye Arena court, featuring the Mediacom sponsorship logo.
With 3,569 career points, Clark has surpassed the previous women’s record of 3,527, which was held by Kelsey Plum of Washington since 2017. The 3,667-point all-time NCAA college basketball scoring record, held by former LSU All-American “Pistol” Pete Maravich since 1970, is now within Clark’s grasp.
