Sharing NRG Stadium with events ranging from concerts to College Football Playoff games is nothing new for the Houston Texans. But in 2026, the Texans will share it with the world’s most renowned athletic event instead of rising seniors or popular pop singers. The United States will host the FIFA World Cup in 2026, with Houston chosen to serve as the host city. There are requirements that must be fulfilled in order to have the honor of drawing attention to such a significant occurrence. The Houston Chronicle stated that “FIFA does not accept corporate stadium names, even though many naming rights agreements were in place long before host cities even made an attempt to entice the tournament to town.” “Therefore, the seven games scheduled for NRG Stadium will actually take place at ‘Houston Stadium,’ per FIFA regulations.” Before the city could sign its agreement with FIFA, NRG, the owner of the building’s naming rights, had to approve the building’s temporary name change. “Looking back to the first steps, there are always things to sort out before you ever submit a bid for an event, so we are really grateful to our business community—in this case, NRG in particular—for stepping up and providing their consent before we even put in thebid in to assist us with this,” Harris County Houston Sports Authority CEO Janis Burke said. The World Cup will feature games at the stadiums that host the New York Jets and Giants, Los Angeles Rams and Chargers, and Dallas Cowboys, Jerry World respectively: MetLife Stadium, SoFi Stadium, and AT&T Stadium.
