Blues Captain Brayden Schenn’s Regression This Season
The St. Louis Blues lost more than just a fantastic top-line player who contributed to the team’s Stanley Cup victory when they dealt Ryan O’Reilly during the NHL trade deadline the previous season. They lost a captain who was a great leader in the locker room and a steadying influence on the team. Following his exit, the Blues had a void in the captaincy until they named seasoned forward Brayden Schenn, their 24th captain in club history. Schenn, who played for the Stanley Cup title team in 2019, was traded from the Philadelphia Flyers to the St. Louis Blues in 2017. He quickly established himself as one of the team’s top forwards, scoring at least 50 points in each of his first six full seasons in the league.
Being a strong presence in the locker room, Schenn is one of the few players who still play from the team’s only Stanley Cup championship. The organization respects him for his steady play and exceptional temperament off the rink. Regretfully, Schenn’s on-ice performance has drastically declined this season, and as the Blues squad enters a moment of transition, management will need to decide quickly on Schenn’s future.
Schenn’s Dull Performance
Even while Schenn’s leadership and value within the locker room are immeasurable, the on-ice performance has been lackluster. Schenn is headed for a career-low in points since he joined the St. Louis team seven seasons ago with just 31 points in 59 games.
