The Toronto Maple Leafs’ obvious playoff starter is Joseph Woll

Hey fast, what has no cell phone or goalie and looks like Al Bundy?

You would be 100% accurate if you said Brad Treliving, general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, on Trade Deadline Day.

The general manager of the Leafs was either too embarrassed to request a replacement before Friday’s NHL trade deadline, or he misread the dates on his Blackberry Callander or dropped it in the restroom.

The Leafs’ inactivity throughout the previous week can only be explained by these two likely scenarios.

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ obvious playoff starter is Joseph Woll.
Don’t tell me the Leafs couldn’t have done something if they wanted to, because TJ Brodie and Ilya Samsonov combined to make $8 million dollars, and neither player would see the ice in the playoffs on a club serious about winning. Besides, it was a buyers market with extremely cheap prices. The only real risk here is that they completely fail and the incoming MLSE President fires Shanhanan, taking Treliving with him. They didn’t want to because if they lose, they can just blame Kyle Dubas, and if they fluke out and Matthews and Marner get hot at the right time, they can win regardless.

Treliving’s silence indicates that they don’t consider that a serious threat, but I’m not so sure. I believe Shanahan has grown accustomed to his current situation and is unaware of the level of anger he will experience should this club lose in the opening round.

Nevertheless, I’m digressing and have lost track of the subject at hand, which is goaltending.

These days, some people find inspiration and redemption in Ilya Samsonov’s narrative. For my part, I don’t think millionaires can be saved. Samsonov earns an absurd amount of money for allowing people to hurl vulcanized rubber at his face, so I’m not impressed that he went from being unplayable (and unclaimed by any team in the league) to somewhat living up to earning ten times more than the heroes of the working class who help to support him.

I simply don’t give a damn. He went on waivers, and I never would have allowed him to start a game for this team again because I don’t think he can play in the postseason. When Auston Matthews scores one goal a game, any goalie can look excellent for a month, but

Joseph Woll started both of the Leafs’ games last week against Boston, demonstrating their agreement despite his recent outstanding performance. From this point on, Woll ought to start each and every game—aside from back-to-backs.

Without a doubt, the Toronto Maple Leafs’ best goalkeeper is Joseph Woll, who should start all 100 of the team’s postseason games barring an injury.

Since Marner, Tavares, Rielly, and Nylander are at their best right now and Auston Mattews is at the top of his game, I believe the Leafs should have put more money into the team.

The Leafs rank 19th in the NHL for 5v5 save %. They rank 21st overall.

And yet Brad Treliving and Brendan Shanahan believed it was acceptable to bring Samsonov, Woll, and Jones into the postseason.

They could have traded for Easton Cowen, Frazer Minten, and the first round pick, which is absolutely unacceptable to hold, in addition to having cap room (Brodie and Samsonov), assets to make a trade, and impact players (Saros, Werenski).

The Toronto Maple Leafs failed by not acting at the deadline. Not doing so was pathetic and cowardly. Brad Treliving’s first season as GM has been an absolute disaster by any objective standard.
