Newcastle £40 million transfer success eases fears over Man United and Chelsea advantage

Newcastle United’s summer transfer ambitions will not be hampered by the club’s failure to qualify for European competition next season, despite concerns that possible targets may reject the Magpies.

United were all set for a European adventure in the 2024-25 season, but were pipped by Chelsea and Manchester United, resulting in the club missing out on a run in either the Europa League or the Europa Conference League, raising concerns among some fans that the summer’s transfer strategy may need to be changed.

According to The Mirror’s Simon Bird on The Everything is Black and White Podcast, players approached by Newcastle should regard a move to Tyneside as a’massive step up.’

He stated, “I don’t believe that being in the Europa League or the Conference League would change a player’s mind about joining Newcastle.” If you’re in the Champions League, I believe it opens up new opportunities for players at different levels, such as when they signed Sandro Tonali last year.

“But I don’t believe it makes much of a difference in terms of who they’ll sign because I’m not sure if the budget is huge right now without selling someone or cashing in on a star.

“They appear to have a headline value of approximately £50-60 million for a player. Eddie Howe stated a month or so before the end of the season that they cannot sign ready-made elite players, so they are signing people like Lloyd Kelly, Tosin, and others to improve them, add value, and double the price, such as Anthony Gordon, who they signed for £35 million-£40 million and is now likely worth £60 million, so that is their approach.
