According to Kieran Maguire, Everton may extend their financial year to avoid violating profit and sustainability rules. The club has already been charged twice last season and may need to sell one of their most valuable players to avoid punishment (Daily Star, 4 May).
While football financial expert Maguire admits it is “absolutely crazy” that teams are compelled to operate in this manner, he believes Sean Dyche’s side may be able to postpone any such issue by a month.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Monday (3 June, 10:46), he said: “Another option that may be available to the club is to change the end of its financial year to 31 July, effectively buying itself another month.” “We’ve seen a few Premier League clubs do that in recent years. It’s insane how PSR is pressing clubs to hasten sales or possibly accept a discount.”
Will Everton break PSR rules again as 777 Partners takeover collapses?
This summer, there has been a lot of chatter about a potential fire sale at Goodison Park, with some claiming that Jarrad Branthwaite, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, and Jordan Pickford might all be sold for a low price.
All of this stems from the fact that it appears like the Blues must gather finances by the end of June in order to avoid preaching PSR. If they can postpone that procedure, they may be able to assure that they receive the appropriate charge for each player.
Ultimately, this would be little more than kicking the can down the road, but in the long run, it could be just what Sean Dyche’s club needs to ensure teams do not steal some of their top players for close to nothing.
Hopefully, Farhad Moshiri and the powers at be at Goodison Park will listen to Maguire’s suggestion and study this option further since it looks like an absolute no-brainer if it can be achieved.
