Don Hutchison, an ex-Toffees midfielder, dismissed rumours of a Newcastle move to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton as “silly season” on Twitter on June 3. The Magpies are also linked with West Ham star Jarrod Bowen.
Hutchison posted a gif of Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, suggesting that signing the two English forwards would make a significant statement in the North-East. He wrote: “Big Rumours Newcastle want DCL at Everton and J Bowen at West Ham. Might just be silly season but…..”
Could Sean Dyche lose star Everton striker to Eddie Howe?
Calvert-Lewin recovered from two seasons of injury agony to play significantly more frequently under Sean Dyche last season.
However, he only has a year left on his present deal and has yet to agree on an extension, despite the club entering into talks [BBC Sport, 31 May].
While the Toffees signed Beto and Youssef Chermiti a year ago and will only begin paying for them this month, Dyche would suffer a severe blow if he lost his top striker.
If he were to move to St. James’ Park, a prospective replacement has been identified, but there will be competition.
Calvert-Lewin may be hesitant to commit his future to Everton due to uncertainty about ownership, but an extension and a sale would help Everton earn the most money for him.
Although the BBC’s Giulia Bould (3 June) has stated that there will be no fire sale at Goodison Park this summer, the club is understood to require assistance in balancing the books, and the danger of losing Calvert-Lewin for free in a year is not one that a team under financial hardship can afford.
However, it remains to be seen what Newcastle can afford to pay in light of their own profit and sustainability issues, as well as how much money Everton would be willing to offer.
