Celtic fans can get real over Edouard and Tierney but 2 alternative reunions make more sense to me – Chris Sutton

Instead of dwelling on the past, Celtic should be looking to the future.

At Celtic, comebacks have been all the rage lately, with Brendan Rodgers continuing his trophy-winning ways.

It makes sense, maybe, that some fans would believe it would be good to see the manager reunite the group after glancing at a few former players. You can appreciate the allure. Supporters believe that the stars will align to bring players like Fraser Forster, Stuart Armstrong, Kieran Tierney, and Odsonne Edouard home.

Perhaps Celtic ought to consider bringing Henrik Larsson back as well. After all, my old friend still seems to be in good shape. Since it’s not a given that these men will return, there may be just as much possibility of seeing Henrik in the upcoming season as there are for the others. Don’t get me wrong; these players would undoubtedly improve the current team. They were all excellent players for Celtic.

I just wouldn’t raise my expectations. First of all, Edouard, you have to be realistic because there are other forces at play. There are rumors that come summer, Crystal Palace will allow him to leave, but how much?

They intend to recoup a significant portion of the £20 million they paid for him to get him from Celtic, and that’s before factoring in his salary. When he moved down there, Edouard’s pay was probably treble, and he would have no trouble finding clubs prepared to match those conditions.

That will put him much beyond Celtic’s means, let’s face it. Tierney is in the exact same situation. I have a sneaking suspicion that he will return to the team eventually, but it won’t be anytime soon unless Arsenal is willing to do a substantial loan deal.

Despite his history of injuries, Tierney is a top-tier performer with a track record of success. He has performed admirably in the Premier League and made some strong impressions when playing for Real Sociedad in Spain last season. He’s another one on a huge salary, so if Arsenal decides to let him go, he won’t be short of offers in England or outside.

The other two hold interest. The fact that Armstrong is a free agent may help to mitigate some of the wage-related concerns. He, too, will have no shortage of offers this summer. He has performed admirably for Southampton, and I anticipate that a long line of elite Championship teams would be thrilled to have him join them.

Even though Armstrong is 32 years old, he still has a lot of energy and takes care of himself. He would be a great addition to Celtic, and he might be able to take Aaron Mooy’s spot from the previous season. As I’ve already stated, Matt O’Riley’s departure shouldn’t be assumed, but Celtic will still require an offensive midfielder.

Negotiations are in progress with Paulo Bernardo, and it would be wise business if they could acquire him from Benfica at a reduced cost. Regarding Armstrong, he seems like a ready-made talent who would be appealing, especially if he were available for free, but is he someone the team would be willing to take a chance on?

Although he doesn’t suit the young player developmental model, you still need to

In relation to keepers, there is constant discussion about Forster returning a third time. I am aware that he enjoyed his stints at Celtic, and at 36, he may choose to end his career there, just like the outgoing number one. However, he still has a year remaining on his rich Spurs contract, and he will have other alternatives.

It’s unclear if he would play out of the back in Aaron Rodgers’ manner, but he certainly has the stature and presence to take Hart’s spot. He would be a good match for this crucial position at the club. It would just be another difficult deal, in my opinion.

While developing and selling players has proven successful for Celtic, we know they won’t stray too far from their tried and tested model. The club can rightfully point to the success it has brought them, with trophies piling up along with cash in the bank. However, if they are to make a serious run at the Champions League, they will need to make a slight shift in approach. While signing prospects is fine, as that is how it has to be at Celtic, they do need to sign a higher level of prospect, such as Edouard, who arrived for £9 million.
