“He’s fearless with the ball, works hard, and I believe he brings a good balance to the club. For me, he’s the ideal candidate to begin on the left.”
Rooney ranks second in England’s all-time goal scoring list, trailing only Harry Kane. After making his international debut at Euro 2004, Rooney went on to represent England in five more tournaments, inspiring a generation of young footballers, including Gordon, who described Rooney as a ‘idol’: “I’ve said plenty of times that he was my idol growing up, I absolutely loved the way he played.” Gordon acknowledged.
“He was aggressive and his ability on the ball was outstanding and obviously being where I am from, he sort of gave me that pathway to believe I could do it.”
Gordon began England’s battle against Iceland at Wembley Stadium on Friday night as the Three Lions’ final pre-tournament warm-up match ended in defeat, and speaking after the game, Gordon acknowledged that being named to an England squad for a big event hasn’t completely sunk in yet. “I don’t think it will hit me until I’m actually on the plane because that’s all you hear: ‘are you on the plane?'” The plane is the most exciting part for me. I’m looking forward to seeing what it’s like, as I’m expecting something enormous and crazy.
