Newcastle ‘submit £16m offer’ to seal first big Premier League signing of summer

Newcastle have reportedly made an initial proposal for Burnley’s James Trafford, hoping to clinch the goalkeeper’s signing.

The Magpies intend to restructure their squad this summer, but they must step carefully because their Profit and Sustainability Rules status prohibits big-money signings unless substantial sales are permitted.

The Daily Mail reports that Eddie Howe’s side has launched a £16 million offer for Trafford to begin their summer purchasing binge.

Burnley’s No. 1 custodian is attracting interest from several clubs, including Chelsea, in what is expected to be a busy summer for Premier League keeper transfers.

Liverpool and Bayern Munich are reportedly interested in the 21-year-old, but the Clarets are unwilling to sell unless their £20 million estimate is satisfied.

Burnley and Newcastle are in negotiations to bring in a new custodian this summer, with the latter eager to move quickly.

After falling out of favour at Arsenal, Aaron Ramsdale was strongly connected with Newcastle. However, the ex-Sheffield United star’s high price tag led Newcastle to consider alternate possibilities.

It remains to be seen whether a bidding battle for their current top target Trafford will cause Howe’s team to reconsider Ramsdale, or whether the Toon Army is set on signing the youthful shot-stopper.

Howe’s team would prioritise signing the ex-Manchester City player, as Chelsea has demonstrated a willingness to use their financial power to hijack deals this summer.

The Blues have already begun Enzo Maresca’s stay in the Stamford Bridge dugout by signing Tosin Adarabioyo on a free transfer after the centre-back chose to end his contract with Fulham.

Newcastle were in contact with the defender for weeks but saw their offer surpassed by their Premier League rivals. Signing Trafford under the noses of Chelsea may be the perfect revenge plan.
