Steven Gerrard pulls plug on transfer for Celtic hero as Paul Gascoigne lands cutting Rangers verdict

With an eye toward keeping their titles for the upcoming season, Celtic won both the Scottish Premiership and the Scottish Cup this past season. The team led by Brendan Rodgers will have the opportunity to add players over the coming months.

As for Rangers, they defeated Aberdeen in the Hampden Park final to win the Scottish League Cup in December of last year. Here are some of the most recent rumors and news about the Glasgow couple.

Steven Gerrard’s side withdraw from Celtic favourite talks

HiHi (via the Daily Record) reports that Al-Ettifaq has “retracted” from Al-Ittihad’s pursuit of former Celtic winger Jota. The former Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is in charge of the Saudi Pro League team, which features some well-known players in its roster, including Moussa Dembele, Georginio Wijnaldum, Jack Hendry, and Demarai Gray.
Jota, 25, has been linked to a change of scenery this summer after struggling to make an impression after moving to the Middle East a year ago. Gerrard will have to hunt for a new residence somewhere, though, as he has chosen to call off a planned transfer.

Gascoigne in Rangers verdict

According to Paul Gascoigne, he could have played for the Rangers without a blindfold. The former England star was a player at Ibrox from 1995 to 1998. He also had stints with Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio, and Middlesbrough.

He was a big hit in Glasgow, as he helped the Gers win the league twice with 39 goals in 104 games across all competitions.

“The highlight of my career was when I went to Scotland,” the now-57-year-old remarked on the Rest is Football podcast after reflecting on his time there. The media said that I wouldn’t succeed up there. Jesus Christ, I played with a blindfold on up there!

“I recall that as we were playing, a child was going to overcome us. I defeated him 2-1 by scoring two goals. I recall going into the dressing room after the game, taking off my boots, giving them to him, and saying, “One day you’ll f****** play like that,” before leaving. Thus, I destroyed him.

“To score the hat-trick, because I’d never really won a championship medal,” Gascoigne remarked after helping Rangers defeat Aberdeen with a hat-trick. I was injured in the FA Cup final [against Tottenham Hotspur], so I only played for around 12 minutes. It was therefore an incredible sensation to score a hat-trick and help Rangers win the title.

“There was definitely a highlight there. All I can recall is going to pick up all the awards—I won sportswriters’ and players’ player of the year. I had a clean slate the first year.

“We played with eighteen internationals,” he said. That, in my opinion, is the main reason Rangers and I didn’t perform very well in the Champions League. It’s because, just picture yourself playing against Kilmarnock, Partick Thistle, one minute, and Ajax the next in a Champions League match. That, I believe, is the reason we had such difficulty [adjusting] in the Champions League.
