Shen Mengyu and Shen Menglu have both departed Celtic FC Women following the expiration of their contracts, Celtic FC confirmed today. After making history and accumulating their own set of winning medals, the two Chinese athletes depart Celtic.

The midfielder and wingback were key members of both Fran Alonso’s Women’s Scottish Cup-winning team the previous season and Elena Sadiku’s squad that won the title last year. Shen Mengyu leaves Celtic with one League Cup medal, two Scottish Cups, and an SWPL1 winners medal because she also scored in the Scottish Cup Final the year before.

Prior to these victories, Celtic Football Club had not won the League Cup in ten years, the Women’s Scottish Cup, or the league championship.

When Shen Mengyu signed a contract with the Celts in 2021, she became the first Chinese woman to play football in the United Kingdom. She was a historic signing. When the squad won both the Women’s Scottish Cup and the League Cup in 21/22, she contributed to their first cup double. She also contributed significantly to the team that won the Scottish Cup back-to-back seasons.

Shen’s achievements at Celtic also won her recognition from the national coach, as she was named one of the final 23 players selected for the 2023 Women’s World Cup squad. In the group stage, she played her first senior international match against Denmark. She would go on to score her nation’s first goal against Uzbekistan later that year, despite not scoring at the tournament.

Shen made 83 league appearances for Celtic in all, contributing 27 goals in those contests.

She’s a player who a few supporters, myself included, recognized as an important part of the squad in the business end of last season. She was putting in good performances regularly but with visa restrictions a factor the time in Scotland was always going to be limited. Elena Sadiku may well have already sourced a replacement by signing Shannon McGregor from Hibs, and we can only trust the boss.

Menglu leaves Celtic FC Women after playing for the team for two seasons. On the first day of the 2022–2023 season, Menglu made her debut. She later achieved success with Celtic, leaving the team with a title in the SWPL and the Women’s Scottish Cup.

After joining Celtic in 2022, MengluAlthough having played in Portugal for a year before, she is finding it difficult to establish herself. Nevertheless, Menglu’s fortunes changed in Scotland, as she scored the team’s first goal on her debut against Hamilton Accies on the first day of the season. Eight goals in 54 league games is her total goal total for her Celtic career.
She may not have had the amazing goal-scoring streak she had hoped for, but she has nevertheless had a big influence on both Fran Alonso and, more recently, Elena Sadiku. Statistics only tell part of the tale, but she has come through for us many times, most notably on the last day of the season when she assisted in setting up Amy Gallacher for the game-winning goal that will go down in history.

And while Lu was at Celtic, she even got the opportunity to play for her country. She was injured and had to withdraw from the senior team after being called up for the first time in early 2023. Despite being controversially left out of the final 2023 Women’s World Cup roster, she eventually.

Menglu has consistently competed for the shirt and has shown up when we most needed her. There is no doubt that she will excel wherever she goes next.

Wishing you both the best of success and gratitude for everything; you have both contributed to Celtic FC Women and made history as Scottish Cup winners and champions for the team!
