Charlie Mulgrew, a former standout for the Celtics, has started a new chapter in his career as the U18 coach of Hamilton Academical. Mulgrew joins the team during a personnel reorganization that was initiated when Elite Academy head George Cairns left. Mulgrew, who played at Celtic during two senior stints, the last of which lasted from 2010 to 2016, had originally interviewed to assume the helm of the Hoops U18 team, returning to his former haunt. Though he acknowledged that he was keen to receive the chance, he was left out when Adam Asghar took over as coach of the U18s and Jonny Hayes was named coach of Celtic’s B Team. Mulgrew and Accies have been in talks, and the club has now formally declared that the 38-year-old has joined the team. With over 150 games for Celtic, a Champions League stint, and a cap for the Scotland national team, the former center-back will be a valuable asset to the Scottish Championship club. Mulgrew also played for Aberdeen and Dundee United, alternating between stints in England with teams like Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers.
