Aston Villa are closing in on the signing of a Premier League left-back following an agreement with Chelsea.
Villa has now finished negotiating personal terms with Chelsea left-back Ian Maatsen, who is expected to join on a six-year contract, meaning Unai Emery will get his wish.
Early this week, the Villans received a bid for the Netherlands international that was accepted for £37.5 million. Since then, negotiations have been held with the player and his representatives. A breakthrough has been made, allowing left-back Maatsen to sign a contract and go through a physical.
According to transfer news journalist Fabrizio Romano, who has since revealed his catchphrase for the trade, this is the case. Despite Villa’s ongoing struggles with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability restrictions (PSR), this high-profile expansion may come as a surprise to supporters, but it is still being built.
Maatsen, who is now competing for the Netherlands in the UEFA European Championships in Germany, will be relieved to have assurances over his future. The 22-year-old had a part in the recent UEFA Champions League final loss to Real Madrid at Wembley. He recently completed his season on loan at Borussia Dortmund.
