Lyon submit bid to hijack Everton deal to sign Yankuba Minteh – L’Equipe

According to L’Equipe, Everton will have competition from Ligue 1 team Lyon in their pursuit of Newcastle United winger Yankuba Minteh.

According to a French source, Lyon has made an offer to Newcastle in an attempt to recruit the 19-year-old forward before Everton, with Brighton, another Premier League team, also showing interest. This information was released on June 24.

Minteh, who made 37 appearances on loan for Feyenoord last season and finished with 11 goals and 6 assists, is in demand this summer as Newcastle must sell to meet profit and sustainability regulations.

Minteh has reportedly already made up his mind and is eager to stay in the Premier League [Fabrizio Romano], despite Lyon’s confidence in presenting a bid to Newcastle. However, the Toffees may find themselves in a bind after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s move the other way was canceled [Keith Downie].

Minteh transfer

Even though Minteh seems to be dead set on moving to Goodison Park, the requirement to fulfill PSR requirements on both ends of the transfer could cause a snag, opening the door for Lyon to sign the Gambian.

Playing in Ligue 1 might be a nice stepping stone for Minteh as Newcastle is allegedly unconvinced that he can transition to Premier League level with the same success as his Feyenoord loan [The Athletic, 24 June].

Despite Newcastle’s unsuccessful attempt to sign Calvert-Lewin, Dan Friedkin’s ownership of Merseyside may provide the Toffees with the necessary finances to complete a deal; however, it is unclear if this will result in a rise in the Magpies’ asking price [Sky Sports, 20 June].

If Lyon and Newcastle have to choose between the two, don’t be surprised if Newcastle chooses not to bolster a Premier League rival. Lyon is owned by billionaire John Textor, who was once in talks to purchase Everton. Lyon should have the funds required to complete a transfer for Minteh [Simon Jordan, 28 May].
