Rio Ferdinand is set to be disappointed after making Anthony Gordon claim ahead of England vs Slovenia

Rio Ferdinand has made it clear that he wants Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon to start for England against Slovenia.

With the confidence that they will play in the round of 16, the Three Lions may relax ahead of their last group match against Slovenia on Tuesday night. England will secure the top spot if they defeat Slovenia, even though they have already qualified from their group.

England is having issues even as they get ready to move further. Their performance in the first leg of Euro 2024 has drawn a lot of criticism, especially in relation to their attacking play.

Playing Phil Foden on the left wing has not really worked for Gareth Southgate. Anthony Gordon, a star player for Newcastle United, is yet to play a minute, therefore he must watch from the sidelines.

Pundits want Anthony Gordon to start for England against Slovenia

A lot of people, including former England international Rio Ferdinand, want that to alter when they play Slovenia on Tuesday night.

On his YouTube channel, he has been talking about England’s next match and outlining his reasons for wanting Gordon to join the team.

He stated, “I think Gordon has to join the team to give us some pace and an outlet.”

“Man, get Gordon on the team and take off his shackles. Let him maintain his height, return, and make transitions; he has the speed, vigor, and excitement to do so. The young person is indeed diligent, dude.

Micah Richards shares Ferdinand’s opinion that Gordon should lead.

After talking about England’s match against Slovenia on The Rest Is Football podcast, the former Manchester City defender has also urged the Toon winger to join the squad.

He said, “Left hand side, we’ve been screaming out for pace, so I’d go Gordon.”

“This season, he has been electric and in great form, so I would play him in his natural position where he has been playing for Newcastle.”

Newcastle United star set to be disappointed again

Although many commentators are urging Southgate to include Gordon in the starting lineup, it doesn’t seem as though the England manager will heed their requests.

The Telegraph claims that Southgate might just make one alteration to the England squad that played Denmark to a 1-1 draw. Instead of a change in attack, Conor Gallagher is anticipated to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold in the middle of the park.

According to The Telegraph, Foden is anticipated to keep his spot in the starting lineup, meaning Gordon will most likely start the third straight game on the bench.

Gordon’s omission from the list is puzzling in light of England’s difficulties. It will have to be off the bench, but perhaps that will change on Tuesday night.

Kieran Trippier to start again for England

Gordon is not likely to start, but Kieran Trippier appears to be.

Luke Shaw’s return to training has bolstered England, but he won’t play against Slovenia. Trippier will therefore continue to play left-back, which is another reason why a player such as Gordon is needed.

Trippier is an excellent defender, but he is unable to effectively attack from his weaker side. The 33-year-old like to move inside when playing on the left because he is often a right-back. When Foden follows suit in front of him, England’s left flank becomes completely unbalanced.

Gordon would give it to you straight. He would remain wide and provide a faltering team more pace while providing Harry Kane with additional assistance.

At Euro 2024, Gordon might help England with most of their problems. But it appears that Southgate will once more overlook Newcastle’s number ten.
