When you consider back in 2021 that a player high on Newcastle United’s summer window was reportedly valued at £80 million, it brings up a rather harsh – if necessary – question.

What specifically went wrong?

Why is that exact same guy supposedly only worth half that amount after four years? Why has Newcastle reportedly given up on Dominic Calvert-Lewin despite his fee lowering from £80 million in 2021 to £40 million now, according to Sky Sports?

Yes, there are a couple of them.

The injuries are the primary one, of course. Former Crystal Palace chairman turned pundit Simon Jordan believes Newcastle would be playing with fire if they added Calvert-Lewin to a front line that already included the equally injured Callum Wilson.

The England international has missed almost 70 Everton games since the start of 2021/22. Although Calvert-Lewin is still unplayable on his bad days, as Merseyside rivals Liverpool discovered in a loss that put an end to Jurgen Klopp’s tenure, those “days” have grown fewer and farther between since Carlo Ancelotti’s Goodison Park period ended.

Newcastle cool Dominic Calvert-Lewin talks with Everton

Calvert-Lewin has had trouble reliably finding the net, even when healthy.

In 2023–2024, there were eight goals, compared to just seven in the combined two campaigns prior. Not even close to reaching the same heights since breaking the 20-goal threshold under Ancelotti around the time of those rumors about an £80 million contract.

It is unclear if Everton will be able to find a team ready to spend £40 million.

Jordan believes The Toffees should take the money and run if such an offer were to come for a man whose recent fashion choices have perhaps generated more headlines than his performances.

“Player Dominic Calvert-Lewin is mediocre. He had a respectable campaign a while back,” Jordan says, via talkSPORT on June 25 at 12 p.m. “It would be great if you could get £40 million for him.

“I would want to sell Sean Dyche and his handbag if I were in his position!

In all honesty, I don’t think he will attend Newcastle. Callum Wilson, after all, is hurt. Would you like to purchase a different player that consistently carries that stigma?

As far as HITC is aware, the negotiations between Newcastle and Calvert-Lewin have nothing to do with the potential trade of Yankuba Minteh for Goodison at St. James’ Park.

Tim Iroegbunam was already traded by Everton to Aston Villa in exchange for Lewis Dobbin. However, the talks about Minteh and Calvert-Lewin were never combined.

Minteh, a right winger with quickness and cutting ability who was compared to Lionel Messi at Odense Boldklub in Denmark, made an impression when on loan at Feyenoord last season under current Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

In the Netherlands, he notched 11 goals and assisted on another six.

Everton had already sent Lewis Dobbin to Aston Villa in exchange for Tim Iroegbunam. But the discussions regarding Minteh and Calvert-Lewin were never brought together.

Minteh, a right winger for Odense Boldklub in Denmark who was compared to Lionel Messi for his agility and cutting skills, made an impression last season when on loan at Feyenoord, where he was managed by current Liverpool manager Arne Slot.

He scored 11 goals and provided an assist on another six while in the Netherlands.

Yankuba Minteh could end up at Everton

If Minteh joins Everton, Dyche will have two solid, albeit very different, choices for the right-wing position. On Monday, Jack Harrison’s return from Leeds United was officially announced.

Harrison comments on the official Everton website, “It’s brilliant to be back.” “Everton is a great club with a great group of guys, and I can’t wait to start training again with a full preseason.”

“Everyone’s final season at Goodison Park must be memorable, and we’ll undoubtedly want to make the most of those games, just like we did last year, and make even more memories.”

“We may draw strength from the previous season, but I believe there is still much room for improvement. We played excellent defense last season, but I want to be able to contribute more to the team’s offensive line and raise my assist and goal totals.
