Emerson Royal has been widely linked with an exit from Spurs with the club having been linked with various replacements.
Tottenham could be on the look out for a new right-back this summer
More than a month ago, Brazilian right-back Emerson Royal was “one of many players” predicted to leave Spurs in the summer, according to Fabrizio Romano on X.

Wednesday, June 26, 24—Fabrizio Romano stated to Caught Offside that Vanderson, a fellow Brazilian right-back, “is someone they are showing an interest in, in case Emerson Royal leaves the club.”
The Sun reports that “Tottenham are lining up a swoop for Manchester City right-back Yan Couto,” with the Premier League winners apparently wanting “£40 million.” Yan Couto is another player that is supposedly of interest should Emerson depart.
Fabrizio Romano plays down Yan Couto to Tottenham reports
Couto, who joined The Citizens from Coritiba in 2020 for a reported sum of approximately €6 million (£5 million), hasn’t touched the ball since. He had a remarkable stint on loan at City’s sister club, Girona (TransferMarkt). But according to The Sun, Guardiola’s team is already “looking to cash in on him.”
In an interview with Caught Offside, Fabrizio Romano said that he doesn’t have “anything concrete on that story.” However, the reporter did clarify that the Spurs are seeking to sign “a backup” for right-back and that, in the event that Couto is traded, he sees him as “more of a starter than a rotation player.”
Although the report stated that “the plan remained or changes to be made at right-back,” it is highly improbable that Postecoglou would guarantee a new signing that he would take Pedro Porro’s place as the team’s starting right-back after the Spaniard had such an outstanding campaign.
“I’m also aware that there have been some rumors about Yan Couto, but let’s wait and see what happens. I’m not aware of anything concrete on that story,” Romano stated.
“But Tottenham wants to sign a backup option for that position because Pedro Porro is their first choice, and I think Couto would be more of a starter than a rotation player.”
Spurs Web Opinion
One of Postecoglou’s most reliable players last season, Pedro Porro was one of the standout performers of the previous season in my opinion. His range and passing style helped to relieve the creative pain when Maddison wasn’t there.
Emerson’s departure makes a replacement necessary, though I would rather see a young, motivated option acquired; it will probably take them a season or two to be seriously considered for Porro’s seat at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Even though Couto seems to meet some of those characteristics, it seems that signing him would be challenging given his expectations regarding playing time.
