Astonishing Dutch media attack on Jordan Pickford – “Terrible Everton goalkeeper” slammed for behaviour

As some of the England squad appear to be fighting against a wave of unfair criticism which doesn’t really exist, it’s a good job they’re not exposed to the words of elements of the Dutch media.

Joey Veerman has been absolutely destroyed by some there, after a poor performance against Austria saw him subbed off early. There was even a claim he should never play for the national side again. Others in the Dutch squad have also faced criticism, but they’ve saved some, well, abuse for Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

The Everton goalkeeper has been one of England’s most reliable players thus far at Euro 2024, but the player’s laughter has really gotten under people’s skin.

Furthermore, when we refer to annoyance, we really mean mindless rage.

Commentator Johan Derksen is quoted on the Dutch website FCUpdate as saying: “The thing that really bothers me about that team is that awful Everton goalkeeper.” A goalie who appears to be from an amateur club’s sixth team and has sagging socks.

“Did you see how happy he was at the end, when he had that ball? It wasn’t good! He had to be admitted, that guy. He was lying there and I think he is not well anymore. Something happened, laughing gas?” Derksen concluded, saying, “He has been behaving like this at Everton.” A different Dutch website, SoccerNews, gathered a harsh selection of criticism directed at Pickford from Dutch football fans.

Everything about it appears very strange and exaggerated, and it’s possible that it all stems from his altercation with Virgil van Dijk and the injuries the Liverpool defender suffered as a result.

Still, shocking remarks from knowledgeable commentators.
