How much Newcastle United wanted Liverpool to pay for Anthony Gordon

There would have been outrage from fans if Newcastle United had sold Anthony Gordon to Liverpool last month.

However, the Magpies took that into consideration while they looked for a way out of the PSR nightmare they were in. Ultimately, they managed to salvage something from the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, as well as Dan Ashworth’s transfer to Manchester United.

Although Newcastle United almost faced a severe scenario that they explored all options to escape, the money they brought in should help them avoid losing ground.

Among them was making money off of a big celebrity, Anthony Gordon, who was said to be joining Liverpool. Although a deal never materialized, there have subsequently been rumors that the possibility of him going back to Merseyside has shifted his thoughts.

As Newcastle is allegedly confident on keeping the 23-year-old at St James’ Park now that the PSR deadline has past, that is unlikely to happen this summer.

However, Newcastle considered selling Gordon at least once, and if Liverpool had accepted the Magpies’ assessment of the winger, it may have happened.

The Reds believed Newcastle was requesting excessive amounts of money, though.

Liverpool declined to submit a formal proposal for the England international Gordon because Newcastle reportedly want more than £80 million for the player, according to the Athletic.

They claim that when Gordon left Goodison Park in 2023 for an initial £40 million, the Magpies were hoping to get well over twice as much as they paid Everton.

Newcastle were not going to let Liverpool grab a bargain

Newcastle refused to allow Liverpool to score a deal.

Rather, Andy Carroll and Elliot Anderson deserve that distinction because they both departed the Magpies for a sum of £35 million.

Even though it is extremely worrying to learn that Newcastle considered firing Gordon, it is comforting to know that they refused to allow Liverpool to take advantage of a low-ball offer. Gordon was going to fetch a very high price if they were going to sell him.

That demonstrates how effective he was for the Magpies in the last campaign and how crucial Eddie Howe has made him.

Gordon still has the capacity to improve, so perhaps that significance can only increase. If Newcastle United doesn’t develop with him, there will be more rumors that he’s leaving
