Fortunately for Newcastle United, it looks like they will avoid a points deduction.
However, it was a very real prospect as they endeavored to find a way out of their PSR nightmare before the end of June 30th.
Two players left St. James’ Park in the past month. Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh were sold, bringing in a combined total of about £70 million.
Furthermore, Manchester United paid Newcastle £10 million in compensation for Dan Ashworth.
Although it was a last-ditch effort, Newcastle appears to have done enough to meet sustainability and profit requirements. Though it was close, maybe the team will speak to the supporters in order to be a little more open.
Newcastle even considered selling Anthony Gordon
It was a nervous way to conclude June, so that needs to happen. Inside St. James’ Park, there seemed to be a panic as they considered every option to raise the necessary cash.
This includes Liverpool being contacted about a potential deal including the sale of a top player like Anthony Gordon. But, they believed that at over £80 million, he was too costly.
Given Gordon’s significance, some supporters would contend that if keeping the 23-year-old meant losing a few points—possibly as many as 10—it would be worthwhile. That was not, however, the Saudi perspective.
PIF did not want Newcastle to receive a points deduction
Newcastle felt that moving a player like Gordon would be a better course of action than breaking PSR and losing points, as reported by the Daily Mail.
They further state that if Gordon’s departure had been necessary, PIF would have approved it. According to The Daily Mail, people in Saudi Arabia didn’t want to face humiliation as a result of the club’s financial misdeeds being punished.
Newcastle can now start afresh
At Newcastle United, there was a sincere desire to follow PSR. That makes sense, but it still baffles me that they waited until the very last minute to put themselves in a better financial situation.
The last few days of June saw turmoil on Tyneside as a result of the complete disaster that has been produced.
Thankfully, they have moved on, and Newcastle managed to succeed. They have complied with PSR without having to sell one of their big players, so they should now be in compliance.
Even if Anderson and Minteh are leaving, it’s a better departure than if Gordon, Alexander Isak, or Bruno Guimaraes had said goodbye to St. James’ Park.
