Newcastle United chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan was reportedly left ‘insulted’ by Manchester United’s negotiations for Dan Ashworth.
After a bid for the sporting director was made, Newcastle and Manchester United got into a heated debate. Before receiving an opportunity to join Manchester United, Ashworth had joined Newcastle fewer than two years earlier and had termed his role at St James’ Park as “long-term.”
After two months on gardening leave at Newcastle, Ashworth’s compensation deal with the clubs was ultimately finalized in late June. The 53-year-old has begun work at Old Trafford, but the chairman of The Magpies is said to be angry over his departure.
Al Rumayyan was reportedly “personally affronted by the former FA technical director’s professions of ignorance,” a feeling that was exacerbated by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s first £2 million compensation offer. As a result, Ashworth was only going to be allowed to depart on Newcastle’s terms, according to iNews.
According to the article, Al-Rumayyan considered the offer to be “insulting” until agreeing to a £10 million price last week.
After that, Newcastle made the decision to name Paul Mitchell as Ashworth’s successor. The former player for Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, RB Leipzig, and AS Monaco decided to join Newcastle as sports director after turning down a position at Manchester United. Compared to Ashworth in the past, Mitchell will have greater influence over prospective transfers and his attention will be directed more toward recruiting. The 42-year-old had a strong history of making good deals at his previous teams before he came at St. James’ Park.
After assembling a competitive top-half Premier League team at Southampton with the acquisitions of Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, Dusan Tadic, and Victor Wanyama, Mitchell also built a title-challenging Tottenham Hotspur team with the additions of Kieran Trippier, Dele Alli, Toby Alderweireld, and Heung-Min Son.
