What Giorgi Mamardashvili now plans to do after Newcastle United deal collapses
Earlier this summer, the Georgian goalkeeper was strongly connected to a move to St James’ Park, with Newcastle’s preferred goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili.
But when Newcastle altered their goalie strategy, the deal fell through. Mamardashvili, 23, was wanted by Valencia for at least £35 million, but the Magpies believed he was too pricey.
Eddie Howe’s quest for a goalkeeper was hindered by his inability to play two elite stoppers during the 2024–2025 season due to his absence from European competition. Because of this, Mamardashvili was not given a guarantee of a spot in the starting lineup by Newcastle, which did not sit well with him.
Newcastle moved their business elsewhere since the player was no longer as eager and the sum was too high. Instead of bringing in James Trafford as planned, they signed Nottingham Forest’s Odysseas Vlachodimos.
What next for Giorgi Mamardashvili
PSR caused a full overhaul of Newcastle’s goalie strategy, as Eddie Howe had hoped for a player who could seriously push Nick Pope. Mamardashvili undoubtedly would have taken such action. Indeed, it appears from his Euro 2024 exploits that he is already better than the Magpies’ first-choice stopper at the moment.
However, it does not appear like he will sign with Newcastle United this summer. Details about Mamardashvili’s potential future have been revealed in a recent publication.
Mamardashvili wants to join a “elite” team where he will be the starting goalie, according to the Athletic.
The Athletic do add, though, that he would be content to remain at Valencia should such an offer not materialize.
Newcastle mess up Mamardashvili pursuit
It seems that Newcastle was the team making the biggest push for Mamardashvili before to the Euros. As they attempted to get the Georgian to St. James’ Park, they had discussions with Valencia.
They did not, however, provide him with the reassurances he was hoping for. When you add in the absence of European football, moving to Tyneside became less and less enticing.
Since then, Mamardashvili has tried his best to demonstrate how foolish that was, but Newcastle has moved on. He was fantastic at Euro 2024, helping Georgia advance to the round of 16.
His outstanding shot-stopping demonstrated why Newcastle ought to have made a stronger push for him and promised to replace Nick Pope. It would have been brutal, but the Magpies had to be that way.
Mamardashvili would have solved their goalkeeping problems for at least the next ten years if they had purchased him. Even though it’s still unknown, the Mamardashvili to Newcastle ship could have left port.
Naturally, money was tight, and the Magpies can only spend so much. Newcastle, on the other hand, has a £100 million transfer budget and is looking to add a center defender and a winger. Nonetheless, Howe may regret his decision to not sign Mamardashvili for a very long time.
