Tottenham Hotspur fans have some bad news coming their way as one of their players has suffered an injury.

It makes sense that Spurs fans are so enthusiastic for the 2024–2025 campaign. Ange Postecoglou’s first campaign was quite promising, and it is widely anticipated that his second one will be even more successful.

The number of injuries Tottenham sustained throughout the previous season was their major drawback. Manor Solomon seldom played, and James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, and Destiny Udogie all had a spell off.

Spurs will be hoping that their next campaign would be better in that regard, but sadly, one of their players has already suffered an injury while serving for his country.

The news will not please Postecoglou.

Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur leaves the pitch ‘crying’ after injury

In his debut season at Tottenham, Rodrigo Bentancur was among the team’s finest players.

The Uruguayan established himself as a mainstay in Spurs’ midfield after joining from Juventus in January 2022 and turned in some outstanding displays. Dejan Kulusevski’s efforts were significantly more thrilling for the crowd, but Bentancur pleased his Tottenham colleagues more.

But Bentancur had a major knee injury in February 2023 that sidelined him for eight months. He injured his ankle a few games after he returned, keeping him out of action for over four weeks.

After managing to stay healthy for the remainder of the season, Marcelo Bielsa called up the midfielder to the Uruguay national team for Copa America 2024.

Bentancur, who was called a “unbelievable player” by Heung-min Son (the Tottenham website), played just a few minutes as a substitute in Uruguay’s first four tournament games. However, late on Wednesday night, he was given the start against Colombia in the semi-final of the competition.

The Tottenham player had a great start to the match, but he was hurt in the first half.

Bentancur and teammate Mathias Olivera both slid in with a powerful challenge as they attempted to steal the ball from Jhon Arias. Sadly, they communicated with each other more than they did with the assailant from Colombia.

Bentancur attempted to run it off while appearing to be in a lot of agony. He did, however, indicate to the bench that he was unable to continue at minute 33.

After being substituted, the star of Spurs was spotted crying as he left the field.

El Observador, a Uruguayan news source, reported on Bentancur, saying that “after 25 minutes he started running with difficulty.” When it became apparent that he could stand it no longer, he begged for the change after thirty-two minutes.

“After 33 minutes, he sobbed as he left the court, and his injury caused the team to become disorganized, ultimately losing 1-0 minutes later.”

What happened to Uruguay after Bentancur’s injury

Uruguay and Argentina were among the favorites to win the Copa America after Brazil was eliminated. They were strong competitors with the arrival of Bielsa.

Bentancur was brought on by the previous Leeds manager, and his job was to contain James Rodriguez, the key player for Colombia.

At the beginning of the game, the Tottenham player fulfilled that task rather well. You could see how much that benefited Uruguay as he followed Rodriguez around.

But Uruguay lost that defensive midfield dominance when Bentancur was hurt and had to leave the field, and it cost them.

Shortly after Bentancur’s replacement, Jefferson Lerma scored the game’s winning goal. Uruguay was unable to break down Colombia, even though they were down to 10 men for the entirety of the second half.
