A player who Newcastle United desperately tried to sign two years ago is now closing in on a move to another PIF club.
Since Saudi Arabia’s transfer window is currently open, PIF’s other clubs—including Newcastle United—are beginning to participate in the transfer market.
In addition to Newcastle, PIF also has a 75% stake in four Saudi Pro League teams. Due to this peculiar dynamic, Newcastle’s Premier League competitors are unintentionally benefiting from the Toon owners’ PSR position. However, every Newcastle transaction involving a PIF team has been called into doubt; Allan Saint-Maximin’s move to Al-Ahli last year being one such instance.
Aston Villa forward set to sign for PIF club
According to Fabrizio Romano, Aston Villa may be about to transfer one of its best players to Saudi Arabia. PIF-owned Al-Ittihad is the party that owns the player in question.
“Al-Ittihad are getting confident to agree on a deal for Moussa Diaby!” he posted on X. Talks between the player’s team and Aston Villa are on. Al Ittihad is nearing an agreement to sign Diaby as a new winger when the deal for Aouar is completed.
Moussa Diaby may be leaving Villa Park after only a single season. Last summer, he moved to them from Bayer Leverkusen, paying a club record £52 million to do so.
In his debut Premier League season, the Frenchman was outstanding, helping Villa place in the top four and earn a Champions League berth. Diaby made 38 games in the Premier League, tallying eight assists and six goals.
Newcastle really wanted to sign Moussa Diaby
It is shocking to learn that Diaby could already be leaving Aston Villa, considering the amount of money they spent on him, his performance, and what the team accomplished.
And considering how frequently he was connected to the Magpies two years ago, he is a player who Newcastle United supporters are well familiar with.
In 2022, Diaby was hailed as Newcastle’s “dream signing,” but the winger turned out to be too costly. Newcastle had hopes of signing Diaby at one stage, but a deal never came together.
The previous summer, he was connected once more, but Harvey Barnes was chosen by the Magpies in his place. Diaby, meantime, relocated to Villa and demonstrated his ability to succeed in the Premier League. Even while he didn’t exactly light the world on fire, he was nonetheless rather amazing.
A year later, Diaby is now joining a PIF-owned team, and Newcastle is searching for a high-profile winger to complement Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak in the attack.
Unfortunately, Al-Ittihad, not the Magpies, are getting closer to a deal for the 25-year-old.
