Former Man City financial guru suggests Magpies did not get the full fee for Dan Ashworth originally expected
Newcastle United did not pick up the £20million compensation fee they were originally hoping for after the bitter Dan Ashworth affair. The ex-Newcastle sporting director Ashworth informed the Magpies he was interested in taking up the hotseat at Manchester United less than two years following his arrival from Brighton & Hove Albion. Newcastle have quickly moved on from Ashworth and hired former Monaco supremo Paul Mitchell this summer – once a target of the Red Devils.
However, former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson has now indicated to Football Insider that the fee was much lower than first anticipated. The figure will remain undisclosed by Borson has waded into the conversation and said: “There is quite a lot of rumour and counter rumour about how much Newcastle settled for in the end on Ashworth.
“I did hear one source say to me the fee was as low £3m. I’ve heard that it was well below £10m and nowhere near some of the numbers that have been rumoured.
“At the end of the day, Newcastle were over a barrel as they conceded last week. The CEO Darren Eales stated that it was extremely close at the last minute in terms of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
“I don’t think they were in a very good negotiating position at the death. I suspect Man United did a decent deal.”
Regardless of the compensation figures, Mitchell hinted last week that he turned down several offers to join Newcastle. And at one stage he was heavily linked with the Red Devils. Mitchell said: “There’s been offers. I don’t think that’s a secret. Some of them have been in the media, some of them true, some of them not true. This time I wanted to come back to the UK, I wanted to take my time. I wanted to make sure the next step was the right one.”
Notwithstanding the salary details, Mitchell made hints last week that he declined many offers to join Newcastle. Additionally, he was once strongly associated with the Red Devils. Mitchell stated: “Offers have been made. That’s nothing hidden, in my opinion. A portion of them have been reported in the media; some are based on fact, while others are not. I wanted to take my time returning to the UK this time. I needed to confirm that taking the following action was the correct one.
