Newcastle United are yet to make a proper breakthrough in the summer transfer window, but that could soon change.

Although Newcastle United has not added any significant new players this summer, the Magpies have signed three senior players thus far. In order to strengthen the goalkeeping unit, the team signed free agents Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy, and added Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth.

All of them will strengthen Newcastle United’s team, but Eddie Howe’s starting lineup won’t be instantly strengthened by them. The Magpies must put that first in order to improve on their seventh-place result from the previous campaign.

Paul Mitchell, the sporting director, has been trying to sign a right winger and a center-back, but he hasn’t had much luck.

That could be about to change, though.

Newcastle United could now be ‘close’ to signing someone

That is according to the Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, who has taken to X to provide an update on Newcastle United’s summer transfer activity.

Edwards believes that a ‘breakthrough’ could be on the horizon, with the new Premier League season now less than three weeks away.

Malick Thiaw feels the most likely after Howe’s comments

The only player that Edwards has mentioned as a potential arrival to St. James’ Park is Malick Thiaw, the center defender for AC Milan.

Thiaw is the main defensive target for the Magpies, as Eddie Howe is a big fan of him.

In fact, the Newcastle manager actually spoke about the 22-year-old following the Magpies’ arrival in Japan. Howe was asked about Newcastle’s pursuit of the defender, and admitted that Thiaw is a ‘very good player’. While he did not provide any insight on a transfer to Newcastle, he perhaps said more than he normally would about a player that has been linked with a move to Tyneside. And movement with the Thiaw deal would make sense, as AC Milan are closing in on a deal for Strahinja Pavlovic. He is also a centre-back, and his arrival could open the door for Thiaw to depart the San Siro.

Should a transfer breakthrough be on the horizon, Thiaw seems to be the most likely candidate. Edwards, though, has hinted that it may be someone quite unexpected. If it’s not Thiaw, then it most definitely will be since no other player has been as strongly connected to a move to Newcastle United.
