Unai Emery’s side are gearing up for their second successive season of European football.
Aston Villa has learned further information on the procedure for the UEFA Champions League draw.
This season, Unai Emery’s team will eat at the top table in Europe after finishing fourth in the Premier League. Their entry into UEFA’s premier tournament coincides with its redesign, which includes an increase in the number of participating clubs and the elimination of the group stage in favor of a league round.
Rather than the customary three clubs with home and away matches, Villa will face eight other teams once. Due to their lack of participation in European football, they will probably be in Pot Four, and more information is now becoming available before the August draw.
The Sky News sports journalist Rob Harris stated in a post: “Manually drawing all 36 teams with actual balls will take place. Eight opponents will be chosen at random from the four pots by software, and their identities will be shown on TV and in the draw hall.
Since the conventional draw procedure would need more than 1,000 balls and take many hours, UEFA will be assisting them with the draw with the use of a computer. Physical balls will be used to draw all 36 teams, starting with the teams in pot one, which include Real Madrid and Manchester City.
Following the physical drawing of a team, eight opponents will be picked at random by automated computer software. The opponents’ home and away locations will be displayed instantaneously on screen.
The software is said to guaranteed randomness and will abide by stipulations such as not being able to play against teams from your own country, and at maximum two from the same country.
Aston Villa will know their opponents on Thursday, August 29 a day after the play-off round fixtures are completed, but they will not know their full fixture list until Saturday, August 31.
