With Michael Edwards back at Anfield and new manager Arne Slot appointed, there were high expectations for the summer window at Anfield.
It would have been easy for many Liverpool supporters to assume that their team would support the new manager in the transfer window and bring in a tonne of fresh players who would be ideal for Slot’s strategies.
The Reds are now the only Premier League team without a new addition as of yet. Although the player in question would first enroll in their junior program, they are drawing near to a highly rated young winger.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently said that reinforcements are being considered for the center-back, central midfield, and wide forward positions despite the very inactive play thus far.
Joel Matip’s free agency departure has resulted in the necessity to sign a replacement center-half. Both Joe Gomez and Sepp van den Berg, who is back on loan, are willing to go as well since they both want to play frequently.
Slot can’t easily promise the two regular minutes with the availability of Jarell Quansah, Ibrahima Konate, and Virgil van Dijk.
Nat Phillips, whose contract is about to expire, is likewise looking for a permanent way out.
Consequently, it appears like Liverpool needs a new center-half, and there were rumors that the English star Marc Guehi, of Crystal Palace, would be joining them.
That followed the Reds’ withdrawal from the competition to sign Leny Yoro, claiming that Manchester United’s payment of about £60 million for the player—who was in the last year of his contract—was an overpayment for a relatively unknown talent.
Liverpool won’t disrupt Newcastle move for Marc Guehi
But there has been talk recently that Newcastle had taken the lead for Guehi. Club-to-club negotiations between the Magpies and Palace have begun, and according to TEAMtalk, Guehi is amenable to the transfer.
Moreover, Fraser Gillan of TEAMtalk, a transfer insider, has learned that Liverpool is “put off” by the expense of acquiring Guehi.
The center back’s initial valuation was in the neighbourhood of £60 million, but more recent reports indicate Palace may try to get as much as £65 million or possibly £70 million before approving a deal.
Either of those players would be a transfer record breaker for Newcastle. The £63 million (with add-ons) they spent to recruit Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad two summers ago is still their most costly purchase to date.
It has been reported that Liverpool is willing to abandon their pursuit of signing Guehi, a move that will be enthusiastically welcomed at St. James’ Park.
That does not, however, imply that Liverpool has given up on finding a new center back.
Liverpool links to £50m-rated Bundesliga ace re-emerge
In a recent update, the Independent reports that Liverpool sees Willian Pacho of Eintracht Frankfurt as a more than capable addition to their center-back group.
Willian Pacho of Eintracht Frankfurt has long been considered a possible center-half candidate, according to the article. However, the 22-year-old Ecuadorian may cost up to £50 million.
Pacho is a left-footer, and because Slot’s existing alternatives at the position are all right-footers, Pacho would provide him more balance. Conversely, Guehi also has a right foot.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano had earlier stated in May that Liverpool was interested in the Ecuadorian international player.
The reliable reporter said, “Liverpool will bring in a new center-back,” in an interview with GiveMeSport.
“They will prioritize that, and Pacho is one of the players they will move forward with.”
