James Bunce is enjoying his new role at Newcastle United alongside Eddie Howe
Concerns were raised about Eddie Howe’s level of satisfaction at Newcastle United following his first interview of the summer. When asked about his future at St James’ Park, amid much-circulated England rumors, Howe responded to a press conference in Germany by saying, “As long as I’m happy in the position that I’m in. As long as I feel supported by the football club and free to work in the way I want to work, yes. That is the crucial thing.”
Howe has now downplayed those remarks and made it clear that everyone is happy with Newcastle’s new behind-the-scenes arrangement. Following a busy summer that saw Amanda Staveley, Mehrdad Ghodoussi, and Dan Ashworth depart the team, James Bunce assumed the position of director of performance, and Paul Mitchell joined as sporting director.
Bunce comes with a great reputation and a proven track record of reducing injuries and enhancing output. In his first formal interview at Newcastle, the former Monaco manager has now discussed how pleased he has been with the atmosphere at work with Howe and his players in recent weeks.
“The players and staff have been fantastic internally,” Bunce stated to the official Newcastle media outlets. “It’s a very close-knit team of players and staff that are really modest yet extremely passionate about the goals we have for the season.
We’re hoping that a true sense of teamwork will result in an amazing season. Three weeks in, I’m feeling fantastic. There is much to be enthused about for the future and plenty to do. I’m really happy I had the chance to join the club.”
Bunce has been called in to help with all facets of sport science, nutrition, psychology, and medical after a season of terrible injury luck on Tyneside. “It’s kind of a new role in football,” he said, speaking about his role. It keeps expanding every year. This implies that for Newcastle, I am in charge of the academy, the men’s and women’s programs.
“I am in charge of the main fields of psychology, medicine, nutrition, and performance and sport science. The performance director’s job is to lead the orchestra, and each of those fields has extraordinary competence, knowledge, and talents.
“To combine all of those to give the players and staff the best support possible in order to maximize everything from physical development to recovery to medical care, and to impact their ability to perform on a weekend, to outperform everyone, and to perform for more than 90 minutes every week.”
“For me, the most significant statistic is the players’ availability and their selection by the coach. That offers us the best chance of achieving our objectives.”
