Newcastle have now started negotiations to sign an attacker – having already made huge progress in a bid to bolster Eddie Howe’s defence.
According to the Telegraph, Newcastle is close to agreeing to a deal for up to £60 million to recruit Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. An announcement might possibly be made this week.
However, Newcastle has already started talks to recruit a replacement forward in the interim.
Newcastle open talks to sign Nicolas Gonzalez
According to an Italian report from Quotidiano Sportivo, Newcastle has contacted Fiorentina to explore a possible trade for Nicolas Gonzalez.
Due to a breakdown in his relationship with the Serie A team, which is hoping to collect at least €30 million (£25 million) from his sale, the Argentina international is anticipated to depart Florence this summer.
Gonzalez is also wanted by Juventus and Atalanta, according to Quotidiano Sportivo.
Despite the Argentine’s wish to go this summer, Fiorentina finds itself in a strong negotiating position because he has a contract with the Italian team through July 2028.
Gonzalez has been likened to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Quotidiano Sportivo also states that Fiorentina will be pleased to keep Gonzalez if no one matches his asking price.
The Belen de Escobar native was unstoppable in the 2023–2024 season, making 44 games, contributing five assists and 16 goals as Fiorentina advanced to the UEFA Conference League final.
Argentine expected to replace Miguel Almiron
Gonzalez is expected to replace Miguel Almiron if negotiations to sign him are successful for Newcastle. Gonzalez is 26 years old.
Before the 2024–2025 season really starts, Newcastle is eager to offload Almiron, since Saudi Arabian teams are attempting to recruit the Paraguay international this summer.
Given that Gonzalez made 35 appearances on the right side last season, where the Newcastle No. 24 usually plays, it seems likely that Howe will switch out the Paraguayan for the Argentine.
Interestingly, the Fiorentina No.10 also made eight appearances on the left and one as a central striker, so he is a versatile attacker.
Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Newcastle push to sign both Guehi and Gonzalez.
