Leeds United kick off their 2024-25 Championship campaign against Portsmouth this weekend
Prior to their trip to Leeds United on Saturday, Portsmouth has strengthened its roster with the two-year contract of Newcastle United veteran Matt Ritchie.
The 34-year-old left the Magpies at the conclusion of his contract, making him a free agent. He played 215 games during eight years on Tyneside. After being relegated in the 2015–16 season, he was a member of the Newcastle team that won the Championship in 2016–17, which allowed the northeastern club to immediately return to the Premier League.
Before this weekend’s match at Elland Road against Leeds, he has now made his way back to his home club, Portsmouth. After graduating from Pompey’s academy, Ritchie played two seasons with Swindon Town before moving on to play for Bournemouth and then Newcastle.
It is a real-life dream. Regarding his return to the south coast, Ritchie remarked, “I’ve always felt like I had unresolved business with the football club. Like everyone else, I like the club. In addition to being thrilled about my return, I’m also rather enthused about the task we have ahead of us. I will always have a particular place in my heart for this club.
