Callum Wilson is set to miss the opening matches of the 2024-25 season for Newcastle United with a back injury.
The 32-year-old had to get injections for a back ailment that has kept him out of the preseason completely. He will also be out from the final two preseason friendlies against Girona and Brest, as well as the Premier League season opener on August 17 against Southampton.
Wilson is probably going to miss the Carabao Cup second round as well as the next weekend’s meeting against his old team, AFC Bournemouth, but Howe is optimistic the striker will be back in the running once the transfer window shuts.
Wilson’s recuperation is doing nicely, according to Howe. He is really upbeat and the damage is not permanent. After receiving an injection, his back is in good condition.
However, there is a timeline for his comeback. He probably won’t return for Southampton, but maybe for the first few games in September.

Matt Targett is expected to return to Newcastle’s training the following week. The left-back’s Achilles problem has kept him out of action for more than nine months, but he is almost fully recovered.
Howe stated, “We’re hoping Matt will train next week.” We haven’t seen him in a very long time, so it will be really encouraging for both of us.
I hope your comeback to training goes really well. Callum is behind slightly, but not much.
Lewis Miley is also out for Newcastle due to a metatarsal problem, and Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are rehabilitating from ACL injuries. On September 1st, Sandro Tonali is scheduled to play Tottenham Hotspur in his first game back after a 10-month betting suspension.
