Transfer business is starting to ramp up as with transfer deadline day fast approaching
Before the summer transfer window closes, Newcastle United has just twenty-one days to make decisions about the future of several players. Eddie Howe and the Magpies are still looking to bring in players, and they are reportedly interested in Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. The Toon are also reportedly interested in adding more options on the right flank.
In order to avoid a repeat of this summer’s scramble to pass the Premier League PSR rules, there’ll have to be a number of exits to balance the books. Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh both departed earlier in the window to ensure the club passed this summer’s PSR deadline, but new transfer supremo Paul Mitchell will want to make certain things are less frantic this time round.
With that in mind, Chronicle Live has taken a look at the eight players whose St. James’ Park futures must be decided before transfer deadline day:
Kieran Trippier
Arguably the biggest name on the list and undoubtedly the most influential figure in Newcastle’s recent history. Kieran Trippier’s arrival at St. James’ Park acted as the catalyst for the Magpies’ resurgence but there’s been plenty speculation surrounding his future at the club.
The England international was linked with a move to Bayern Munich last summer and has recently been linked with a move to West Ham United. Still one of the best defenders in the division when it comes to creating chances, at 33-years-old and the emergence of Tino Livramento, it may be the right time to cash in on Trippier this summer. Reflecting on Trippier’s uncertain status, Howe said: “I see him as a huge part of the team and the squad going forward. But, as I said earlier, while we’re in this moment of financial fair play still affecting the club, there’s still a possibility that anyone could leave. I won’t talk about individual players, but there will naturally be with incomings, there will be
“I don’t think Kieran’s openly looking to leave. He’s been very good in training this week. He’s come back with an ambition to play and to fight for his place, like every player does when they come back during pre-season. So there’s been no issues. I see a player that’s fully committed.”
Callum Wilson
Another influential figure in Newcastle’s recent history, Callum Wilson was the reason the Magpies avoided being drawn into a relegation battle for a number of years. However, injury problems have plagued his St. James’ Park tenure and at 32-years-old, it seems like the right time to cash in on the England forward if the Toon want to progress.
Wilson is sidelined for four weeks due to a recent injury, therefore Howe will open the season with Alexander Isak and Will Osula up front. Wilson, like Trippier, had been connected to West Ham United earlier in the summer; however, those rumors appear to have ended with the Hammers’ acquisition of Niclas Füllkrug.
Despite playing in just 26 games across all competitions, the Newcastle attacker nonetheless contributed with 10 goals and one assist in the previous campaign. The Magpies will probably reinvest any money they are able to recover for Wilson this summer.
Miguel Almiron
Miggy Almiron is another player who might leave this summer for emotional reasons. Ever since Howe arrived on Tyneside, the Paraguayan has seen a turn-around in his fortunes, so there can be no doubts about his work or ambition.
However, Newcastle needs to increase their production on the right side of their forward line since he only managed five goals and three assists in the previous campaign. There is a widespread belief that this summer is the ideal time to relocate the 30-year-old, who is rumored to be going to Saudi Arabia.
Jacob Murphy’s form in pre-season has put him ahead of Almiron in the pecking order, with the England youth international also boasting a better goal contributions record last season with three goals and eight assists in all competitions
Martin Dubravka
Another long-serving Newcastle United man with doubts over his future, is Martin Dubravka. It felt like his time at the club was over when he joined Manchester United on loan, but a return to the club last season muddied the waters. The arrival of Odysseas Vlachodimos was an unexpected one and will seemingly push Dubravka further down the pecking order. With Mark Gillespiem Nick Pope and John Ruddy at the club, there’s a need to trim the current goalkeeping unit.
The Slovakian international, who has suitors in England, Germany, and Saudi Arabia, appears to be the most likely of the five to depart the team this summer. “What’s the strategy for me? What lies ahead for me? Dubravka had earlier shouted in the window, “I’m not sure if they want me to stay or not. “I find it challenging because I have been concentrating on my work with the national team.”
Ryan Fraser
Newcastle United want to part ways, Ryan Fraser wants to move to Southampton and Southampton want Fraser. But, the fact the Magpies winger is in the final year of his contract is understood to be complicating matters with both parties unable to agree on a fee as things stand.
Earlier in the window, Southampton boss Russell Martin said: “I think we’re all hopeful that at some point that will happen. But he’s contracted to Newcastle. I think he would love to come back and we would love to keep him. Everyone wants him: Me, the fans, the owners, the players and the staff – Wee Man himself, but he is under contract at another club and a good contract.
“It’s their prerogative to do what they want with him at the moment and unfortunately for us and for Wee Man, it’s not what we want. So much of football is about timing and there might come a time where it’s no longer viable for us or an option. We have to be looking at other people as well.”
Isaac Hayden
Another player that Newcastle United has too much of is saac Hayden, who may depart before the transfer season shuts. The Magpies midfielder, who spent the previous season on loan at QPR, has never been a part of Howe’s plans.
He is rumored to be eager to rejoin the Championship team after making 17 appearances at Loftus Road the previous year. Newcastle will be trying to take advantage of him while they can, since he just has one year left on his present contract.
Jamal Lewis
Although Jamal Lewis has never had much success at Newcastle United, the Magpies manager has given him an unexpected lifeline this summer.
Howe stated to Chronicle Live: “Jamal and I will see. Since his Norwich days, when I was a huge admirer of his, I have always thought highly of him and respected him. He wants to become better and has a positive mindset. I believe that he gained a lot from his loan period.
“We’ve watched him rejoin the group, and he’s had excellent training. In the end, it will be determined by his desires. We’ll wait and see since it could be impossible to promise him that he wants to play football.”
Moving away from St. James’ Park would probably be the wisest course of action for all parties involved, though, since Dan Burn and Lewis Hall are ahead of the Northern Irishman in the running for playing time.
Matt Targett
Matt Targett is another player whose future is in doubt. The former defender for Aston Villa had a strong debut with Newcastle, helping the Magpies maintain their top tier standing. However, he hasn’t played since suffering a hamstring injury during the Carabao Cup victory over Manchester United in November of last year.
Targett was linked to a January transfer to Celtic, but his injury ultimately prevented him from leaving Tyneside. He hasn’t played for Newcastle in the preseason, and like Lewis, he’s not expected to play a lot of first team minutes this year.
