In addition to continuing negotiations to recruit Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, Newcastle United is allegedly considering signing a highly sought-after La Liga midfield player for Eddie Howe this summer.
Newcastle transfer news
Prior to William Osula’s apparent arrival, the Magpies were headed for a painful summer transfer season that may possibly involve Guehi. After their initial approach was rejected, the people at St. James’ Park allegedly came back with a second offer that was about £50 million, but Palace rejected them again because they believed Guehi was worth a substantial £65 million.
But as the Magpies attempt to mount a last-ditch effort, the England international might not be the last name through the door. Graeme Bailey claims that Newcastle has discussed a strategy to counter interest from Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers in order to capture Andre Almeida from Valencia.
Almeida, who is reportedly valued at £25 million, may end up becoming Bruno Guimaraes’ perfect midfield partner. In a recent news conference, the Brazilian reiterated his commitment to St. James’ Park, saying through Fabrizio Romano: “I’m very happy at Newcastle; I’ve never said I would like to leave.” I’ve always stated that I want my name to appear in the club’s records. I’m eager to give it my all for the supporters and the team.”
Now, he may be rewarded in the middle of the park with Almeida as his new sidekick.
Almeida can partner Guimaraes
Newcastle can strengthen their midfield and provide Howe with a plethora of formidable alternatives for a mere £21 million, particularly once Sandro Tonali serves his ban. But for the time being, if the Magpies want to intensify their pursuit of the Valencia star and outbid competitors in the Premier League, then Almeida will be the center of attention.
The midfielder’s game would surely improve in several areas if he moved to Tyneside. Given his ability to play up front, his goal production is understandably low; in the previous season, he assisted on one goal and scored just two. But those numbers need to rise around players with the caliber of Guimaraes and Alexander Isak.
The Magpies could use all the depth they are able to obtain. They suffered in the previous season, missing out on both European football and the top four, since they had no choices outside of Howe’s starting lineup. This time, competitors like Almeida show that they’ve maybe learnt from their past errors and are prepared to compete once again for a spot on the grandest platform.
